Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words that mean “women-like breasts.” It affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men and may affect only one or both breasts.
The male breast reduction procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases, removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. Liposuction can result in asymmetry, dimpling, wrinkling, unevenness and surface irregularities over the treated area, which can usually be avoided by VASER, making it the treatment of choice for Gynecomastia. Male breast reduction is more often combined with VASER lipo of the abdomen, flanks and back for complete body contouring in males.

The duration of the procedure is approximately 1 – 2 hours. It is carried out under local anaesthesia with sedation and is performed as a daycare procedure.
If the Gynecomastia consists primarily of excessive fatty tissue, VASER Liposelection is used to remove the excess fat through a small incision, 3 – 4mm wide, placed in the underarm area. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, it needs to be excised, with a scalpel alone or in conjunction with VASER. An incision is made in an inconspicuous location on the edge of the areola. The excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are cut from around the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breast. The VASER cannula, if required, is inserted through the existing incisions. In extreme cases where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, excess skin may have to be removed. Occasionally, a small drain is inserted through a separate incision to draw off excess fluids.
Whether you’ve had excision or liposelection, you will feel some discomfort for a few days after surgery which can be controlled with medications. Swelling & bruising will persist for a while. You need to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for 2 – 3 weeks, 24 hours a day, and a few weeks more at night. You can return to work as early as a day or two after surgery. Stitches will generally be removed about 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure. You need to avoid sexual activity for a week or two and heavy exercise for about three weeks. You need to stay away from any sport or job that risks a blow to the chest area for at least four weeks.
As with any surgery, there are risks. These include skin injury, bruising, bleeding, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, and seroma formation. Liposuction can result in asymmetry, dimpling, wrinkling, unevenness and surface irregularities over the treated area, which can usually be avoided by Liposelection. In addition, temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation might occur. In cases where there is too much excess tissue, there might be the need for a secondary procedure to remove more tissue after the skin has retracted.
