ABOUT LABIAPLASTY

Labiaplasty has been recently growing in popularity. Women, nowadays, are choosing to move under the knife for a number of reasons. Some may intend to seek relief from genital pain, whereas others may have some other cosmetic concerns about the appearance of their vagina. Whereas, others may, hope to enhance their sexual satisfaction.

However, Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves, trimming and shaping up of the inner and outer lips of the vagina. The labia minora is basically the inner flaps of the skin that covers the clit and the vagina, whereas, the labia majora is the exterior part. The labia may get elongated or asymmetrical as a result of sexual intercourse, childbirth, genetics or ageing.

Most of the women undergo Labiaplasty mainly to target certain cosmetic purposes. Some women have elongated, protruding labia that makes a woman uncomfortable in certain clothing or while sexual activity or even during other physical activities. So it is not only undergone for cosmetic reasons but also to relieve numerous issues that may cause pain or discomfort for women. Labiaplasty can, therefore, prevent the twisting and tugging of the labia.

The labiaplasty is normally executed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis so the patients can easily return back to their home after following the procedure. The surgery takes about two hours by a proficient surgeon. During the ongoing surgery, the larger and uneven inner vaginal lips are cut and then shortened by using a special kind of scissors, scalpels and laser. The exact location of the incisions depends on the many factors, like the configuration, texture and size of the labia. The labia majora that is present outside the body can be diminished with liposuction in most cases.

Labiaplasty, though, outweighs its benefits, but like any other cosmetic procedure, this surgical procedure also includes certain risks and complications like infection, bleeding, temporary numbness, the asymmetry between the inner and outer labia lips, decreased feeling, pain, excess scar tissue build-up, and sexual dysfunction. Moreover, the labiaplasty results do not last long below the level of the hair-bearing labia majora.

After deciding to undergo the procedure, consulting with the surgeon is really very important. The surgeons after discussing the procedure and reviewing the medical history will provide you with some pre-op instructions. These instructions include to stop smoking and consuming alcohol for at least a week before and after the procedure. Smoking and consumption of alcohol interrupt the recovery process. Some medications like aspirin, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs and blood thinners are also restricted to avoid the risk of bleeding during the surgical procedure. Certain herbal remedies like vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids can also increase the risk of bleeding.

After undergoing the procedure, the candidates may experience some pain and be bruising that can be resolved with pain-mediations. Other than this the area must be kept clean and the post-op instructions must be followed to avoid complications.

After following the surgical procedure, the candidates in most cases have to refrain from sexual intercourse for about a month. The female genital will mostly be tender and swollen for several weeks and the labia with the surrounding area will mostly be bruising. Some oral medications may be prescribed by the surgeon that can reduce the pain and some antibiotics that will effectively reduce the risk of infection after the surgery. The surgeon will also provide with some post-op instructions that must be followed minutely to avoid any complications. Heavy and strenuous exercises must be avoided for about three or more weeks after the surgery. Women can use tampons after 10 days of the Labiaplasty surgery. Some post-surgical bleeding may still persist and for that, they just need to wear a pad for a week, due to post-surgical bleeding.
